Incident Information

A wrong-way collision on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County killed a mother and her adult daughter and left other members of their family injured, including an 8-year-old girl who prosecutors later described as being in critical but stable condition.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:46 p.m. Saturday, August 29, on the southbound I-270 spur just south of Democracy Boulevard in the Bethesda area.

Maryland State Police said a Ford Mustang was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a Toyota Camry.

Two passengers in the Camry — Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23 — died as a result of the collision.

Charging documents identified Jahin’s father, Mohammed Faruk Hossain, 62, as the Camry driver. He suffered injuries described as minor.

An 8-year-old girl traveling in the Toyota was also hospitalized. Prosecutors said during an August 31 bond hearing that she remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The Mustang driver was identified as Jose Caballero Nolasco, 32, of Germantown. He was also transported to a hospital following the collision.

State police subsequently arrested Caballero Nolasco and filed charges including two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and a count involving life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.

Police said impairment is suspected as a factor. The charges are allegations and must be resolved through the court process.

Authorities closed portions of the interstate for several hours while the Maryland State Police Crash Team investigated.
