Incident Information

Maryland authorities have identified a woman who died after a police pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle collision in Brandywine that also sent other people to hospitals.

The fatal crash occurred on the morning of August 25, 2026, following an attempted traffic stop by deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the attempted stop was connected to information received from law enforcement officials in Arlington County, Virginia. The vehicle did not stop, and Charles County deputies followed it as it traveled toward Prince George’s County.

The pursuit ultimately ended on U.S. Route 301 south of McKendree Road, where the fleeing vehicle collided with two uninvolved vehicles.

Two women occupying the fleeing vehicle were transported to hospitals following the crash. One was reported to be in grave condition.

An occupant of one of the uninvolved vehicles was also hospitalized with injuries.

On August 31, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office identified the woman who died as Alexis Cummings, 33, of Temple Hills.

Authorities also identified the two Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies involved in the pursuit as PFC Eddie Vanover, a five-year veteran, and Cpl. Justin Bottorf, a 13-year veteran. Both were assigned to the Patrol Division.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the collision because it involved police activity and resulted in a death.

Officials said the deputies had body-worn cameras as well as dashboard cameras. Investigators have also requested any cellphone, dash-camera or private surveillance recordings that could help document the events leading to the crash.

The initial reports did not provide the makes and models of the three vehicles involved.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not issued final findings regarding responsibility for the fatal collision.
