Craig Budd Sr., 61, was remembered as a barber, musician and community mentor
Incident Information
A Gaithersburg pedestrian collision claimed the life of a longtime local businessman and musician Friday evening, leaving family members and members of the Montgomery County community mourning his death.
First responders were dispatched at approximately 8:10 p.m. on August 28 to North Frederick Avenue near Professional Drive.
Police found Craig Budd Sr., 61, of Gaithersburg, in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said Budd was walking near or crossing North Frederick Avenue when a northbound vehicle struck him.
Additional local reporting identified the vehicle as a black 2006 BMW 325i.
The BMW’s driver remained at the scene following the collision and was cooperating with investigators. Police did not immediately announce criminal charges or identify the motorist.
Budd was well known in the Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg communities. He owned Major League Barbershop in Montgomery Village and had also participated in the region’s go-go music scene. Family and friends described him as a father, grandfather, mentor, barber and musician.
His family said Budd had two adult children and four granddaughters. He was also associated with the go-go band High Potential.
The Montgomery County Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash. Authorities had not publicly announced whether speed, impairment, pedestrian visibility, traffic signals or another factor contributed to the collision.
Investigators have asked people with information about the crash to provide it to the department.
North Frederick Avenue, also known as Maryland Route 355 through parts of the county, carries substantial vehicle traffic through Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village.
Budd’s death adds a personal dimension to the broader issue of pedestrian safety along heavily traveled suburban corridors.
