Driver Dies After Mazda Strikes Tree in Arnold

A 33-year-old Charlotte Hall man died Monday night after his vehicle left Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, struck a guardrail, and crashed into a tree in Anne Arundel County.

Eastern District officers responded at approximately 10:30 p.m. on July 27 to Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard west of Governor Ritchie Highway. The Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team was called to investigate.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man was driving a 2020 Mazda 3 southbound on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. As the vehicle approached a left-hand curve or turn in the roadway, the driver failed to negotiate it successfully.

The Mazda traveled off the road, hit a guardrail, and then struck a tree. Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

Police identified the motorist only as a 33-year-old man from Charlotte Hall. His name was not included in the department’s initial public release.

No passengers or other vehicles were listed as being involved. Authorities did not report any additional injuries.

The Crash Reconstruction Team processed the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Reconstruction specialists generally document tire marks, vehicle resting positions, roadway geometry, damage patterns, visibility, and other physical evidence to determine how a fatal collision occurred.

Police had not stated whether speed, alcohol, drugs, fatigue, distraction, weather, or a medical emergency contributed to the crash. Those factors remained part of the continuing investigation.

Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard runs near several communities in northern Anne Arundel County and includes curved sections where drivers must adjust their speed and direction. Investigators had not announced whether the roadway itself played any role.

No charges were expected unless investigators identified conduct by another person that contributed to the crash. The department asked anyone with relevant information to contact police.
