Incident Information

A highway maintenance project turned tragic when a worker was killed in a crash along a major roadway in Somerset County. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on April 28, 2026, on the northbound side of Route 13 near King Miller Road.

Authorities say 70-year-old Dipakkumar Patel was inside a parked work vehicle when it was struck from behind by a Dodge Caravan. The impact was severe enough to cause fatal injuries, and Patel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, a 31-year-old woman from Salisbury, and a passenger in the vehicle were both transported to a hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.

The crash occurred in a work zone, an area that often requires drivers to reduce speed and remain alert. Despite increased awareness campaigns, incidents involving roadside workers continue to be a concern across Maryland and the country.

This fatal crash came shortly after National Work Zone Awareness Week, a time dedicated to reminding drivers of the importance of caution around construction and maintenance crews. Officials emphasized the need for drivers to slow down and remain vigilant in these areas.

Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash, including whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role.
