Patrick Murphy Jr. died after MD-228 collision
Incident Information
A collision at a busy Waldorf intersection resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and injuries to another driver, according to Maryland State Police.
The crash occurred around 9:16 p.m. on May 1, 2026, at the intersection of Maryland Route 228 and Mill Hill Road. Authorities say 36-year-old Patrick Murphy Jr. was operating a Yamaha motorcycle when the collision occurred.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Ford Explorer, driven by a 69-year-old man, was attempting to make a left turn when the motorcycle struck the vehicle. Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Explorer sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Investigators believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash, though a full determination has not yet been made. The roadway was partially closed for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation.
Motorcycle crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the limited protection riders have compared to occupants of passenger vehicles. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of visibility, right-of-way awareness, and safe speeds for both motorcyclists and drivers.
The investigation remains ongoing.
