Incident Information

On the quiet Sunday morning of December 10th in Leonardtown, Maryland, tragedy struck at the intersection of Point Lookout Road and Pin Cushion Road. It was just a bit before noon when deputies received a call about a horrific motor vehicle collision involving a horse and buggy. When they arrived on the scene, what they found was nothing short of devastating. The unfortunate accident had resulted in the ejection of all four occupants from the buggy and the death of the beloved animal.

Evidence shows that a juvenile was driving the carriage, carrying multiple family members, when the horse became agitated and caused the buggy to move into the path of an oncoming 2021 Toyota Tundra heading southbound. The details of the situation are still being pieced together, but early indications suggest that the incident was unforeseeable and unavoidable.

The accident left several people with life-threatening injuries. The juvenile operator and one adult passenger were transported to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, while another passenger was taken to MedStar St Mary’s Hospital. In an effort to ensure the safety of an infant passenger, they were transported to Children’s Hospital as a precaution. While it is certainly a tragic event, it is fortunate that speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors to the collision.

It goes without saying that we must all remain vigilant and cautious while traveling on the road. Accidents can happen at any moment, and it’s important to prioritize safety for ourselves and others. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families impacted by this heartbreaking event.
