Incident Information

A man who was taking selfies while driving when he caused a fatal car accident in Baltimore County last year was sentenced to six months in prison.

Dylan Shields, 29, was convicted of negligent manslaughter in connection with a car crash that killed 30-year-old Luke Souders. According to prosecutors, Shields had his car set to cruise control while he took selfies, leading to the Jan. 2021 crash.

Shields was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with all but six months suspended. In addition, Shields is required to complete 200 hours of community service and will be on probation for three years after his release from prison. This tragic case highlights the dangers of distracted driving and the need for drivers to pay attention to the road at all times.

The car accident happened on the afternoon of January 19, 2021, on northbound I-95, prior to exit 49A. The Maryland police investigation revealed that the driver of a northbound car, identified as Michael Shields, rear-ended another northbound car, driven by Brandon Souders.
