Baltimore Driver Dies After Multi-Impact Crash

A Baltimore collision that initially sent one driver to the hospital became a fatal crash case after authorities learned that the injured motorist had died more than a week after the incident.

Baltimore Police said the collision occurred at approximately 1:48 p.m. on July 28, 2026, at Auchentoroly Terrace and Gwynns Falls Parkway. Investigators identified the injured driver as Purcell Ellwood Carter Jr., who was operating a 2019 Ford Transit van.

According to the preliminary investigation, Carter was traveling east on Auchentoroly Terrace as he approached the intersection. His Ford Transit struck the rear of a 1999 Chevrolet Tracker that had stopped for a red traffic signal.

Police said the sequence did not end with the initial rear-end collision. The Ford Transit driver allegedly attempted to leave the scene, struck the Chevrolet Tracker a second time and then lost control of the van. The Transit ultimately crashed into a tree.

Emergency personnel transported Carter to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Baltimore Police later received a significant update on August 6. At approximately 2:45 p.m., officers with the department’s Accident Investigation Unit were informed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that Carter had died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the July 28 collision.

The police release did not report injuries to the occupant or occupants of the Chevrolet Tracker, nor did it provide additional information about why the Transit initially struck the stopped vehicle.
