Incident Information

The Maryland State Police are investigating a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that left a man injured and his 5-year-old son dead. The driver of the car involved in the crash spoke with 11 News and said that he did contact the police after the accident.

Corey Maddox Jr., 30, said that the crash happened so quickly at the intersection of Edgewood Road and Route 24. It was just before 11 p.m., it was dark, and he just didn’t see the father and son on the road. Maddox said that while he kept driving for a little bit, he did call the police and admitted to what happened.

This is a tragic accident, and our hearts go out to the family of the victim. We hope that the investigation by the Maryland State Police will help to bring some closure to the family.

Maddox said he couldn’t stop in time. “One second, nobody was there. The next second, I see a man pulling a child in front of the car and I did as best as I could to stop but I saw when I hit them both. It really freaked me out about the situation,” Maddox said. So far, he has not been charged. Sanders was taken to Eastern Main Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and his son was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Both were from Middletown. witnesses told police that Sanders ran into oncoming traffic and put his son in front of Maddox’s car. “Everything really happened in the blink of an eye,” Maddox said.

In a recent interview, Maddox said that he panicked after the crash, briefly drove away, and then called his mother and police. He said that he couldn’t believe what had happened and didn’t want to believe it. Maddox said that he provided the police with all the information they needed. Unfortunately, the crash proved deadly. The 5-year-old child was taken to Upper Chesapeake where he passed away. The father was flown to Shock Trauma for his injuries. Maryland State Police Spokesman Ron Snyder said that this was a tragic event. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

State police said that impaired driving was not a factor in the car crash that injured a 5-year-old girl and her father, but Rodney Buchanan, who lives next to the crash scene, told 11 News that car and pedestrian accidents are all too common in the area. Buchanan said that he has been living in the area for eight years and there has been an accident almost every day. Maddox said that he feels for the family and wants them to know that he cares. The 5-year-old girl and her father were not walking in the crosswalk when they were hit by the car. State police are investigating the incident.
