Car Collided With a Light Pole Resulting in Death and Injuries
Incident Information
A tragic accident early Wednesday morning in Sandy Spring, Maryland, has left one teenager dead and two others hospitalized. Authorities from the Montgomery County Department of Police responded to the scene around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane.
According to investigators, the vehicle involved struck a wooden light pole, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Sherwood High School senior Sanaa Vil. Her identity was later confirmed through posts by the school’s girls basketball team on X (formerly known as Twitter). Two other occupants, also 17-year-olds—a girl and a boy—were transported to a nearby hospital. Both remain in critical condition.
The Sherwood High School girls basketball team paid tribute to Sanaa, sharing their heartbreak: “Sanaa was a bright light, charismatic, a natural leader, and one of the kindest people we’ve known. We are devastated by her loss.”
The team also asked the community to keep another of their teammates, who was in the car with Sanaa, in their thoughts and prayers as she recovers from her injuries. “She faces a long road to recovery,” they said.
Following the crash, Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane were temporarily closed, and drivers were urged to exercise caution in the area. Police have confirmed that all three individuals involved in the crash were students at Sherwood High School.
At this time, there is no information available regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
