Pedestrian Seriously Injured on Route 355 in Gaithersburg

A pedestrian was seriously injured early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle along one of Gaithersburg’s major traffic corridors.

Montgomery County police and fire-rescue personnel were dispatched at approximately 3:40 a.m. September 17 to North Frederick Avenue, also known as Maryland Route 355, at Christopher Avenue. Responders located an adult male pedestrian who had suffered serious injuries in the collision.

Emergency personnel transported the man to an area hospital for treatment. Authorities had not publicly identified him or provided an updated medical condition when initial reports were released.

Police said the vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene. No information was immediately released about the vehicle’s make or model, and authorities did not announce any charges or citations.

The collision led police to close all southbound lanes of North Frederick Avenue between Watkins Mill Road and Christopher Avenue while investigators examined the scene. The closure affected the early morning commute along the busy Route 355 corridor. Officials later reopened the southbound lanes after the scene had been cleared.

Investigators had not released details about what the pedestrian or driver was doing immediately before the collision. The available police information also did not establish whether speed, visibility, impairment, distraction or another factor contributed.
