Incident Information

A serious multi-vehicle crash on the Baltimore Beltway disrupted traffic and sent two people to the hospital during the afternoon commute on March 31, 2026. The collision occurred on the Inner Loop of Interstate 695 near Interstate 70 in the Catonsville area, a heavily traveled corridor known for congestion during peak hours.

According to Maryland State Police, the incident involved three vehicles, including one that overturned during the crash. The rollover added complexity to the emergency response, as crews worked quickly to secure the scene and assess injuries. A driver and passenger from one of the vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities reported their injuries as non-life-threatening, though the severity of the crash prompted a significant response.

Shortly after the initial incident, a second crash involving three additional vehicles occurred nearby. Officials believe traffic slowdowns and sudden braking contributed to the chain-reaction collision. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the secondary crash, but it compounded traffic delays across the west side of the Beltway.

Traffic backups stretched for miles as emergency personnel cleared wreckage and reopened lanes. Commuters experienced extended delays as crews worked to restore normal traffic flow. Officials did not release the identities of those involved or provide details about the makes and models of the vehicles.

Incidents like this highlight the risks associated with high-speed interstates, particularly when congestion and sudden stops create hazardous driving conditions. Even crashes classified as non-life-threatening can trigger secondary accidents and widespread disruption.
