Motorcycle Crash Claims Rider in Mays Chapel

Baltimore County police are investigating a single-motorcycle crash that killed a 22-year-old rider in Mays Chapel.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 7:10 p.m. on July 17, 2026, to the area of West Timonium Road and Heritage Road. According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was traveling through a curve when he lost control.

The motorcycle struck a curb, and the rider was ejected. He traveled across the sidewalk and struck a telephone pole, police said.

Authorities identified the rider as Phillip Groh, 22. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police did not identify the motorcycle’s make or model. The initial report also did not state whether another vehicle was involved or whether investigators suspected speeding, impairment, distraction, a mechanical failure, or a roadway condition.

Baltimore County’s crash investigators were assigned to determine what happened before the motorcycle left its intended path. The review may include measurements from the roadway, an examination of the motorcycle, witness interviews, nearby surveillance recordings and any available electronic information.

The intersection remained part of an active investigation after the crash. Authorities had not announced any citations or criminal charges.

Single-vehicle motorcycle crashes can involve several contributing factors, including speed while entering a curve, limited nighttime visibility, debris, uneven pavement, braking decisions or a rider’s attempt to avoid an unseen hazard. Police had not attributed this collision to any particular cause at the time of publication.

The death was one of multiple serious crashes reported in Baltimore County that Friday. Later that evening, officers responded to a separate fatal single-vehicle collision in Reisterstown.

Officials urged motorists and riders to remain attentive, observe posted speed limits, and approach curves at speeds that allow them to maintain control.
