Route 50 Truck Crash Leaves One Person Critical

A serious multivehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer brought traffic to a standstill Wednesday morning on U.S. Route 50 in Prince George’s County, sending two people to hospitals and leaving one patient in critical condition.

Emergency responders were called at approximately 8:30 a.m. on July 29 to the westbound side of Route 50 near Exit 7A in the Lanham area. According to information attributed to Maryland State Police, the collision involved a tractor-trailer and two passenger sedans.

The impact caused the tractor-trailer to catch fire briefly. Fire crews brought the flames under control while medical personnel assessed the occupants of the vehicles. Two people were transported to local hospitals. Authorities described one patient’s condition as critical, while the condition of the second person was not specified.

The crash also caused an oil spill, prompting a hazmat response. Emergency workers closed several lanes in both directions while firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and environmental crews worked at the scene.

The resulting lane restrictions produced major traffic delays along one of the primary routes connecting Annapolis, Prince George’s County, and Washington-area communities. Drivers were advised to avoid the area while responders cleared damaged vehicles and addressed the spilled oil.

Authorities had not publicly identified the injured individuals or disclosed which vehicles they occupied. The makes and models of the two sedans were also not released in the initial report.

Investigators were working to establish the sequence of events that caused the tractor-trailer and passenger vehicles to collide. No information about possible speeding, impairment, distraction, mechanical failure, or citations was immediately available.

The investigation remained active as transportation crews worked to restore normal traffic. The severity of the wreck, fire, oil spill, and critical injury required an extensive emergency response and prolonged lane closures.
