BETHESDA, Md. — Two people were hospitalized early Thursday following a head-on collision in Montgomery County, officials said.

The crash happened around 4:45 a.m. near River Road and Goldsboro Road. Firefighters reported that the impact sent one vehicle down a 20- to 30-foot embankment into a ravine. Crews were able to rescue the driver and bring them to safety, according to fire department spokesperson Pete Piringer.

The collision closed portions of northbound Goldsboro Road and eastbound River Road for several hours, but all lanes have since reopened.

Both individuals involved in the crash were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
