Pedestrian Seriously Injured on Crain Highway

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle along Crain Highway in La Plata, prompting an emergency response and transportation to a Washington-area trauma center.

Police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. on July 28 to the southbound lanes of Crain Highway near Talbot Street. Responders had received a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

When officers arrived, they found an injured person lying in the roadway. The incident was initially described as involving a rear-end collision, although authorities had not explained how that collision led to the pedestrian being struck.

Fire and EMS personnel evaluated and stabilized the patient at the scene. The pedestrian was then transported by ambulance to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for further treatment.

The injuries were described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. Authorities had not released the pedestrian’s name, age, hometown, or gender at the time of the initial report.

Officials also did not identify the driver or disclose the make and model of the vehicle involved. It was unclear whether the driver remained at the scene, whether any citations were issued, or whether another vehicle was involved in the reported rear-end crash.

The collision occurred along a heavily traveled section of Crain Highway, which carries local and through traffic across Charles County. The nighttime conditions and presence of an injured person in the road required responders to secure the area while medical treatment and the preliminary investigation were conducted.

Police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators will likely examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, statements from witnesses and drivers, and any available surveillance or dashboard-camera footage.
