Early-Morning Harford County Crash Leaves Driver Dead

Maryland State Police are investigating an early-morning Harford County collision that killed one driver and sent another to a hospital.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack responded at approximately 4:14 a.m. Sunday, August 30, to the intersection of Maryland Route 152 and Maryland Route 147.

According to the preliminary investigation, a Toyota 4Runner was traveling southbound on Route 147.

Police said the Toyota entered the intersection against a red traffic signal and collided with the front passenger side of a Volkswagen Jetta traveling northbound on Route 152.

The Volkswagen’s driver, Christopher Larry Grimsley, 40, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the Toyota’s driver as Todd Dunaway, 27. Emergency personnel transported Dunaway by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Maryland State Police said investigators believe impairment may have contributed to the collision. Their preliminary assessment does not itself establish criminal liability, and any charging decision would depend on the evidence collected during the continuing investigation.

Police did not provide additional details about the nature of Dunaway’s injuries in the initial report.

The crash was one of four fatal collisions investigated by Maryland State Police during the weekend of August 29-30. Together, those incidents resulted in seven deaths.

The intersection of MD-152 and MD-147 is located in the Fallston area of Harford County and connects two significant state highways carrying local and through traffic.

Investigators will continue evaluating evidence to determine the sequence of events and factors that contributed to the crash.
