Deadly Head-On Minibike Crash Under Investigation In Nanjemoy

A late-night head-on minibike crash in Nanjemoy left one young man dead and a teenage rider seriously injured.

Maryland State Police said the crash happened around 11:21 p.m. on June 15, 2026, on Maryland Route 224, also known as Riverside Road, near Wilson Landing Road. A 16-year-old Nanjemoy boy was traveling south on a 2021 minibike when it collided head-on with a 2018 minibike operated by 19-year-old James Thomas Claggett of Nanjemoy.

Both riders were flown by Maryland State Police Aviation helicopters. The teen was taken to Capital Region Hospital in serious condition. Claggett was flown to MedStar/Washington Hospital Center and later pronounced dead.

Police said neither rider was wearing a helmet, and the minibikes were unregistered and lacked headlamps. The investigation is ongoing.
