Incident Information

A Monday afternoon collision on Interstate 70 in Howard County left a box-truck passenger dead, injured the truck’s driver and led to serious criminal charges against an 18-year-old motorist.

Maryland State Police said the crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on August 31 in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Morgan Station Road in the Woodbine/Lisbon area.

According to investigators, a Genesis G80 and an Isuzu box truck were both traveling east when the Genesis struck the rear of the truck.

The impact caused the box truck to go out of control, strike a guardrail and overturn.

A passenger in the truck, Shakee Ali Davis, 32, of Havre de Grace, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the box truck’s driver as Noah Ensminger, 21, of Elkton. Emergency personnel transported Ensminger by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Genesis driver was identified as John Amare, 18, of Damascus.

Following consultation with the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office, authorities charged Amare with negligent motor vehicle homicide while under the influence, motor vehicle homicide while impaired by alcohol, negligent manslaughter and additional related offenses and traffic citations.

Police said Amare was being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center following the crash.

The collision and subsequent investigation forced officials to close lanes of I-70 for approximately four hours.

Maryland State Police Crash Team investigators continue to examine the collision. Criminal charges represent allegations, and the investigation and court process will determine the ultimate legal outcome.

The crash occurred along I-70, one of Maryland’s primary east-west transportation routes, and the involvement of a commercial box truck added significant recovery and investigative work following the rollover.
