Motorcycle and Tractor-Trailer Drivers Hospitalized

Incident Information

A motorcyclist was flown to a Baltimore trauma center after a multivehicle collision on Route 51 near Oldtown in Allegany County.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash on July 28 along Route 51, also known as Oldtown Road. The incident involved multiple vehicles, including a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer.

Because of the motorcyclist’s injuries, responders requested an aviation transport. The rider was flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a regional facility that treats patients with serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured and transported to UPMC Western Maryland for medical evaluation and treatment. The original report did not describe that driver’s condition.

Authorities closed Route 51 in both directions so investigators could examine the scene. The closure also provided firefighters, medical crews, tow operators, and law-enforcement personnel with room to work safely.

Maryland State Police and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded. State Police assumed responsibility for the collision investigation.

The identities of the motorcyclist and tractor-trailer driver were not released. Authorities also did not disclose the makes and models of the vehicles or state how many additional vehicles were involved.

No preliminary account of the collision sequence was available. Investigators had not said whether one vehicle crossed the center line, attempted a turn, slowed in traffic, or collided while passing.

Because the crash involved a commercial truck and resulted in serious injuries, investigators may review driver statements, vehicle inspection records, electronic information from the tractor-trailer, road conditions, and physical evidence from the scene.

The investigation remained active following the reopening of the roadway. No citations or charges had been announced, and no subsequent update on either patient’s condition was included in the original report.
