Incident Information

A young person was killed and a woman was injured after a driver attempting to flee from police collided with four vehicles in Capitol Heights on Friday evening, according to authorities.

The woman and the young person were in one of the cars struck by the suspect’s SUV, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General reported. Both were taken to a hospital, where the woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, but the young person later died.

At around 6:25 p.m. on Friday, a District Heights police officer attempted to stop a driver in an Infiniti SUV in the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike, the attorney general’s office said in a statement. The driver initially stopped but then sped off northbound onto Addison Road South.

The officer lost sight of the vehicle and radioed a description of the SUV. Shortly after, both a District Heights officer and a Capitol Heights officer spotted the SUV, activated their emergency lights, and attempted to stop the driver.

The driver soon crashed into four cars in the 1200 block of Addison Road South. The driver was apprehended and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The woman and the young person were rushed to the hospital, where the young person was later pronounced dead. Their identity and age have not been released.

The occupants of the other three vehicles hit by the SUV were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, and authorities have not shared the reason for the initial traffic stop.
