Incident Information

A woman was killed, a young child was injured, and three teenagers were hospitalized following a car crash involving a stolen vehicle in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department, the crash occurred at approximately 3:41 p.m. near the intersection of Sheriff Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Landover.

During a news briefing, Acting Police Chief George Nader said officers from the Seat Pleasant Police Department had initially followed the stolen vehicle but were instructed to disengage shortly before the collision.

“They were told to stop following, and they complied,” Nader explained. “Shortly after, the crash occurred at the intersection.”

Police said the stolen vehicle, which was carrying four young individuals, ran a red light and struck another car.

Shaunte Denise Canty, 35, of Washington, D.C., was killed in the crash. Her 2-year-old child, who was also in the vehicle, survived but sustained injuries and is currently being treated at a local hospital, according to reporting from WTOP’s partner, 7News.

Three of the teens in the stolen vehicle suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. All four will remain in police custody.

Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy expressed concern over the incident.

“Our concern, like many of yours, is the direction that our young people are going in,” she said. “When we hear of incidents like this involving youth making tragic decisions, our hearts go out to the victims. But it also raises serious concerns about what our young people are thinking.”

County State’s Attorney Tara Jackson stated her office will pursue charges for all applicable legal violations and is committed to holding those responsible accountable.
