Robert Lumpkins suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision
Incident Information
A violent head-on collision in St. Mary’s County left one driver with life-threatening injuries and sent two other people to local hospitals.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:55 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, to Piney Point Road near Drayden Road in Piney Point.
Emergency personnel found two damaged pickup trucks. Two people were trapped, and one person was reportedly unconscious.
Investigators said a white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Robert Lumpkins, 38, of Leonardtown, had been traveling north on Piney Point Road.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Silverado crossed the center line and continued onto the southbound shoulder. When the driver attempted to return to the roadway, the Chevrolet collided with a southbound 2021 Ford F-250.
The Ford was driven by Nicholas Puchetti, 63, of Piney Point. The available report did not publicly identify Puchetti’s passenger.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 transported Lumpkins to a trauma center with injuries considered life-threatening.
Puchetti and his passenger were taken by ambulance to area hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities later reported that everyone involved was in stable condition.
Preliminary evidence suggested that speed and alcohol may have contributed to the collision. That assessment was part of an ongoing investigation and had not resulted in publicly announced charges at the time of the report.
Because of the crash’s severity, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to document the scene and determine the sequence of events.
Authorities asked witnesses who had not already spoken with investigators to contact Corporal Rachael Owens at 301-475-4200, extension 8108.
