Incident Information

A tractor-trailer carrying chickens overturned in Worcester County Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision that sent the truck’s driver to a hospital.

Maryland State Police responded at approximately noon on September 24 to the intersection of U.S. Route 113 and Bishopville Road, also designated Maryland Route 367, near Bishopville.

According to the initial report, two vehicles were involved in the crash. One was a tractor-trailer transporting chickens. The truck overturned onto its side following the collision.

Emergency crews faced more than the damaged vehicles. Fuel leaked onto the roadway, requiring a HAZMAT response while police and other personnel worked to secure and clean the area.

The collision also scattered cages and chickens along the side of the highway. WBOC reported that numerous birds were visible near the roadway and that many had died in the crash.

The tractor-trailer driver was transported from the scene by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Authorities had not released the driver’s name, the nature of the injuries or the driver’s medical condition.

No other human injuries were reported.

Maryland State Police said the circumstances that caused the two vehicles to collide remained under investigation. Initial reporting did not identify the second vehicle’s make or model, its driver, the direction each vehicle had been traveling, or whether investigators suspected speed, distraction, impairment or another contributing factor.

The crash occurred at a clearly identifiable highway junction. U.S. Route 113 meets Maryland Route 367/Bishopville Road in the Bishopville area.

The incident remained an active Maryland State Police investigation as cleanup and vehicle recovery operations continued.
