Incident Information

Emergency crews responded to a serious single-vehicle crash in St. Mary’s County on March 30, 2026, after a pickup truck veered off the roadway and came to rest in a marsh near St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Point Lookout Road and College Drive. Authorities reported that a Toyota Tundra left the roadway, possibly while attempting to avoid a deer. The vehicle then struck a section of a wooden pedestrian bridge connected to the college before continuing down an embankment into a marsh area near Wherritts Pond.

First responders worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle. Due to the severity of the injuries, a medical evacuation helicopter was requested. The driver was transported for advanced medical care, though officials have not released the individual’s identity or current condition.

The crash caused damage to campus infrastructure, including the pedestrian bridge, and temporarily impacted traffic in the surrounding area. Authorities have not indicated whether speed, impairment, or other environmental factors contributed to the incident.

Rural and semi-rural roadways, particularly those near wooded areas, present unique hazards such as wildlife crossings and limited visibility. Sudden evasive maneuvers can lead to severe outcomes, especially when vehicles leave the roadway.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the crash.
