Tragedy struck on Monday, December 4, 2023, when a young Brandywine resident lost their life in a horrific motor vehicle collision. Cyrus Amado Salazar Jr., only 17-years old, was sadly taken far too soon, leaving his loved ones and community in mourning. The accident occurred on Maryland Route 229 near the Indian Head Rail Trail, and authorities from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack and the specialized MSP CRASH Team responded immediately.
Salazar Jr. was driving his 2013 Volvo S80 northbound on Maryland Route 229 when he lost control of the vehicle. As he approached a curve south of the Indian Head Rail Trail, he was unable to maneuver the turn, and the car careened off the road, ultimately colliding with multiple trees. The force of the impact was severe, causing Salazar Jr. to be ejected from the car due to his failure to wear a seatbelt.
Responders were quick to arrive on scene when they found him with life-threatening injuries, doing everything in their power to provide him with medical attention. Despite the tireless efforts of the medical professionals at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Salazar Jr. ultimately lost his fight and was pronounced deceased on December 5th, 2023.
Maryland State Police CRASH Team led by Sergeant J. Zimmerman has taken the helm of this ongoing investigation to provide closure to those involved. As the team continues to delve into the events that led up to the crash, they have identified driver error and excessive speed as primary factors contributing to this terrible event. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of wearing seatbelts to protect oneself from the dangers of automobile accidents.
