Moving Truck Triggers Major Fairland Pileup

Incident Information

A moving-truck driver received multiple traffic citations after a large chain-reaction collision sent 10 people to hospitals in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:43 p.m. on July 18, 2026, at the intersection of Columbia Pike, also known as U.S. Route 29, and Fairland Road in the Fairland area. Investigators said the moving truck lost control before striking several vehicles traveling through or stopped near the intersection.

Emergency officials initially received reports that several occupants were trapped. Firefighters later determined that everyone involved had escaped the damaged vehicles before rescue crews arrived.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service reported that seven occupied vehicles and 18 people were involved. Ten people, including three pediatric patients, were transported to several hospitals with injuries described as minor. All were expected to survive. Eight additional people were examined at the scene but declined hospital transportation.

Six ambulances responded, including three advanced-life-support units and three basic-life-support units.

Photographs and video from the scene showed extensive vehicle damage. A Tesla Cybertruck was separated into two major sections during the collision. Other vehicles were pushed across the roadway or overturned.

Police later cited the unidentified moving-truck driver for negligent driving and failure to control the vehicle’s speed to avoid a collision. The citations do not by themselves establish criminal responsibility, and authorities continued investigating what caused the driver to lose control.

Northbound U.S. 29 was temporarily closed at Musgrove Road while emergency personnel treated the injured, documented the scene, and removed the damaged vehicles. The closure caused substantial traffic delays in the surrounding area.

Despite the destructive appearance of the crash, officials reported no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
