Driver Hospitalized After Fairground Road Crash

A driver was taken to a Maryland hospital Thursday afternoon after a Dodge Charger crashed into a utility pole near the Charles County Fairgrounds, leaving the motorist trapped inside the vehicle while live electrical equipment complicated rescue efforts.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel were dispatched at approximately 1:55 p.m. on August 6, 2026, to the 8400 block of Fairground Road in the Bel Alton/La Plata area. The crash happened near the primary entrance to the Charles County Fairgrounds.

According to The BayNet, the Dodge Charger struck a utility pole with enough force to bring electrical wires down around the vehicle. The driver was the Charger’s only occupant and remained conscious after the collision. Emergency crews reported that the motorist was experiencing shoulder pain but could not safely leave the car.

The damaged electrical infrastructure created an additional hazard for firefighters. Crews had to carry out an extrication while also working around downed and sparking wires near the crashed vehicle. The driver was ultimately freed at approximately 2:17 p.m., roughly 20 minutes after responders were initially dispatched.

An ambulance transported the driver to University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. The article did not identify the motorist or specify a final diagnosis or condition beyond the reported shoulder pain.

Fairground Road was temporarily shut down while emergency personnel worked at the scene. Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative crews were requested to address the damaged pole, electrical equipment and fallen wires. Police were also investigating what caused the Charger to leave its travel path and strike the pole.
