Incident Information

Howard County police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a man after a Subaru left a roadway and struck a tree in Glenelg Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded at approximately 1:06 p.m. on September 2 to Dorsey Mill Road near Roxbury Road following a report of a serious collision.

Investigators said a 2017 Subaru Forester was traveling westbound on Dorsey Mill Road when, for reasons that remained unknown, it traveled off the roadway and hit a tree.

The male driver was the only person in the Subaru. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Police did not release his name in the initial reports.

No other vehicles were reported to have been involved, and authorities did not report any other injuries.

The collision led police to close a section of Dorsey Mill Road between Roxbury Road and Old Mill Road while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators examined the roadway. The closure lasted approximately three hours before the road reopened.

Howard County police did not initially identify speed, alcohol, distraction, a medical emergency, roadway conditions, or any other factor as a cause of the crash. The circumstances surrounding why the Subaru left the roadway remain part of the investigation.

Single-vehicle crashes can require investigators to examine several possible sources of evidence, including tire marks, vehicle damage, roadway geometry and available video or witness accounts. In this case, police have not publicly announced their findings beyond confirming the Subaru’s direction of travel and its impact with the tree.

The crash occurred in Glenelg, a largely rural part of western Howard County where many roads differ considerably from the denser road network closer to Columbia and Ellicott City.

Authorities said the investigation remained ongoing following the fatal crash.
