Incident Information

ELKTON — A 19-year-old woman was tragically killed Monday morning after being struck in the head by the sideview mirror of a passing pickup truck while attempting to cross an Elkton highway, according to the Elkton Police Department.

The victim was identified as N’Riaa Demby of Elkton. She was pronounced dead at ChristianaCare Union Hospital in Elkton after being transported there by ambulance, police reported.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. as Demby tried to cross the westbound lane of East Pulaski Highway (Route 40) at the South Bridge Street (Route 213) intersection. A Ford F-150 truck’s driver’s side mirror struck her head, causing severe trauma. Police said Demby was heading north, toward Big Elk Mall, at the time.

The driver, identified only as a Perryville woman, stayed at the scene following the collision, authorities said.

“This was a tragic accident, and it doesn’t appear there was any criminal intent,” said Lt. Ronald Odom, an EPD detective and spokesperson. He also confirmed that the truck driver had a green light at the time of the accident.

According to Odom, Demby was walking with at least one other person when the incident occurred. “We don’t know if she hesitated or wasn’t paying attention,” he added.

Initial reports incorrectly described the crash as a hit-and-run.

“The driver remained at the scene,” Odom clarified. “She got out of her truck after the accident and began walking around, trying to calm herself down because she was so shaken.”

Several EPD officers, paramedics, and other first responders worked at the scene, which drew a crowd of onlookers.

The incident led to the closure of a section of both westbound and eastbound Route 40 for about 90 minutes, resulting in significant traffic delays on nearby detour routes.
