Incident Information

Tragedy struck the Maryland community on the afternoon of February 23, 2023, when a serious crash occurred involving multiple vehicles on Solomons Island Road and Birdsville Road. Unfortunately, investigation into the incident – which happened at 3:59 pm local time – revealed that a 2023 Kenworth W900 dump truck and a 2001 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck were involved in a collision. Reports suggest that the Kenworth was heading northbound on Solomons Island Road, approaching Birdsville Road, while the Dodge traveled eastbound and was attempting to turn left onto Solomons Island Road in front of the Kenworth. The driver of a Kenworth was unable to avoid the collision and subsequent fire that resulted in their death.

The resulting impact caused the Dodge they struck to rotate into the southbound lane, where it was met with a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. The initial collision sent the Kenworth into an embankment, where it overturned and caught fire, trapping the driver inside. Tragically, they succumbed to their injuries at the scene. John Arne Illig, 29-year-old driver of the Dodge, suffered serious injury as a result of this collision and was flown for Medical treatment at Capital Region Medical Center in Maryland State.

Our thoughts are with him during his recovery and all those affected by this tragic event.  Angelina Marie Scarton, a 34-year-old female from Lothian, Maryland, is lucky to have escaped unharmed after her Hyundai collided with an oncoming big rig. The Traffic Safety Section is currently conducting an investigation of the crash in order to ascertain the precise cause.
