Slingshot Driver Ejected in Bryans Road Crash

A driver suffered serious injuries Monday night after being ejected from a Polaris Slingshot during a collision on Indian Head Highway in Bryans Road.

Emergency crews were called at approximately 8:33 p.m. on July 27 to the intersection of Indian Head Highway and St. Dunstan Road. The crash involved a conventional passenger vehicle and a Polaris Slingshot, a three-wheeled vehicle with an open cockpit.

Initial emergency reports indicated that the Slingshot’s driver was thrown from the vehicle during the impact. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel treated the injured person at the scene while requesting an aviation response because of the apparent severity of the injuries.

Responders established a helicopter landing zone near Indian Head Highway and Camp Hedges Place. Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 2 landed in the area and transported the patient to UM Capital Region Medical Center.

Authorities classified the driver’s injuries as serious. The patient’s name, age, gender, and hometown were not released in the initial report.

Officials also did not identify the driver of the passenger vehicle or provide information about whether that person was injured. The make and model of the second vehicle were not reported.

Police were investigating how the vehicles collided. No preliminary information was released regarding right of way, speed, possible impairment, driver distraction, or whether either vehicle was turning at the intersection.

Because a person was ejected, investigators may examine whether the Slingshot’s restraint system was in use and whether vehicle damage or roadway evidence helps establish the direction and force of the impact. Witness statements and nearby camera footage may also assist the investigation.

The collision and helicopter operation required emergency personnel to control traffic in the area. Police had not announced charges or citations when the original report was published.
