Driver of Pickup Truck Dies in Fiery Crash on I-70

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A deadly crash involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck shut down all lanes on Interstate 70 East for more than four hours Thursday morning, according to Maryland State Police (MSP).

The incident occurred shortly after 4:15 a.m. near Sand Hill Road. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two vehicles collided and subsequently caught fire, resulting in a large blaze that required emergency crews to respond immediately.

The driver of the pickup truck, who was hauling a trailer at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions worked to extinguish the flames, which severely damaged both vehicles and scattered debris across the roadway. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes as officials cleared the wreckage and conducted their investigation.

All lanes of I-70 East were closed for nearly five hours before reopening to traffic shortly after 9 a.m.
