Motorcyclist Dies in Dual Highway Collision

A Friday-evening collision between a motorcycle and a Subaru left a young motorcyclist dead and sent the car’s driver to a hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Hagerstown police responded shortly after 5 p.m. on July 17, 2026, to the 1700 block of Dual Highway. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found a motorcycle and Subaru that had been involved in a two-vehicle collision.

The motorcycle operator, identified as 20-year-old Clayton Hendrix of Smithsburg, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru was transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment of injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.

Officials did not immediately release the model of the motorcycle, the specific Subaru model, or a detailed account of which vehicle had the right of way. No information was provided indicating whether speed, impairment, distraction, or weather contributed to the crash.

Members of the Hagerstown Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to document the roadway, examine the vehicles, and collect physical evidence. Reconstruction investigators commonly review tire marks, impact locations, vehicle damage, roadway design and available surveillance or dashboard-camera footage when determining how a fatal collision occurred.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings are expected to be forwarded to the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will review the evidence and determine whether any traffic or criminal charges are appropriate.

Authorities asked witnesses and anyone possessing relevant video to contact the Hagerstown Police Department.

The fatal crash underscores the vulnerability of motorcyclists when collisions occur with passenger vehicles. Even when another motorist survives with less serious injuries, motorcycle riders have comparatively little physical protection from the force of an impact.

The investigation remained active, and police had not announced any charges at the time of the report.
