Two Passengers in Box Truck Die After Crash With a BMW on I-70
Incident Information
NEW MARKET, Md. — Two passengers were killed in a fiery crash involving a box truck Sunday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Frederick County, according to Maryland State Police.
Troopers responded around 4:10 p.m. to the scene on westbound I-70 near Exit 62 in New Market.
Preliminary reports indicate that a BMW SUV rear-ended a box truck near Maryland Route 75. The impact caused the box truck to cross the median and collide head-on with an oncoming tractor-trailer.
Both the box truck and the tractor-trailer veered off the road into a wooded area along eastbound I-70 and caught fire. The drivers of both trucks were airlifted to Shock Trauma in Baltimore for treatment.
Tragically, two passengers in the box truck were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the BMW were transported to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown with injuries. The driver of the BMW remained on-site and declined medical treatment, police said.
As a result of the crash, both directions of I-70 were closed between Routes 75 and 27.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details at this time.
