Incident Information

Five people were transported to a hospital Monday morning after two vehicles collided at U.S. Route 50 and Whaleyville Road in Worcester County.

Maryland State Police were called to the intersection at approximately 11 a.m. September 14 for a report of a two-car crash.

Emergency crews treated the people involved at the scene before five patients were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for additional medical care. Authorities did not immediately release their names, ages or specific injuries.

No deaths were reported.

Police also did not immediately identify the makes or models of the vehicles involved.

The collision resulted in temporary lane closures near the intersection while emergency crews assisted patients, removed crash debris and worked to clear the roadway. The lanes later reopened.

Maryland State Police continued investigating what caused the two vehicles to collide. Initial reporting did not identify speed, impairment, distraction or failure to yield as established contributing factors.

Route 50, also known as Ocean Gateway in this portion of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, intersects Maryland Route 610/Whaleyville Road in the Whaleyville area.

The intersection has previously been the site of serious collisions, but authorities had not connected any previous event to Monday’s crash.

Because all five people were transported by ambulance for medical treatment, the crash meets the hospital-transport standard for this accident-news filter even though the exact severity of each injury had not yet been released.
