Óscar José Araujo-Mejía required spinal treatment after the Stevensville collision.
Incident Information
A 21-year-old man remained hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash on Kent Island that occurred while federal immigration officers were pursuing his vehicle, according to reporting by The Baltimore Banner.
Maryland State Police responded shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday, August 21, to Maryland Route 8 and Skipjack Parkway in Stevensville. Police identified the driver as Óscar José Araujo-Mejía, who was operating a Chevrolet Spark.
According to the preliminary state police account, the Chevrolet failed to yield at a red traffic signal and collided with a Toyota Highlander. The impact then caused the Spark to strike a Honda CR-V.
Authorities later said federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers had been pursuing the Chevrolet in two unmarked vehicles with emergency lights activated. ICE and a relative of Araujo-Mejía subsequently provided substantially different descriptions of what occurred before and immediately after the collision. Because those accounts remain disputed, neither version should be presented as definitively established fact.
Araujo-Mejía sustained significant injuries. The Banner reported that he was initially taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center and was expected to undergo spinal surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Shock Trauma representatives described him first as being in good condition and later in fair condition.
The article also reported allegations from a relative regarding agents’ conduct during the arrest, while ICE denied using force when removing Araujo-Mejía from the vehicle. Those competing claims remained unresolved in the reporting reviewed.
