Incident Information

A tragic accident in Carroll County last night claimed the life of a local resident. The Maryland State Police are investigating the incident, which involved a 2022 Ford Explorer.

The driver, Geoffrey Brittingham, 41, from Hampstead, was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Emory Road near Cedarhurst Road. Brittingham’s 7-year-old son, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for medical care.

Initial investigations suggest that Brittingham failed to halt for a closed construction zone at the North Branch Patapsco River bridge replacement site, leading to a crash with a 2014 Volvo Excavator and a Mack Dump Truck nearby. The construction zone was not active at the time.

Authorities confirmed no other injuries were reported and reminded drivers that the MD 91 bridge will be closed for an extended period, recommending alternative routes via MD.
