Passenger Dies After Rollover Crash Near Delmar

A passenger was killed Wednesday evening after a vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned repeatedly near Delmar in Wicomico County.

Deputies with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Mardela Volunteer Fire Department responded at approximately 5:14 p.m. September 16 to the area of Norris Twilley Road and Norfolk Drive after receiving a report of an injury crash.

The Sheriff’s Office said its preliminary investigation found that the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over multiple times.

One passenger was ejected during the crash. Emergency medical personnel pronounced that person dead at the scene.

The driver and another passenger were also treated by emergency personnel. Authorities said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Officials had not publicly identified any of the people involved as of the initial reports.

The crash forced the roadway to remain closed for an extended period while members of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit documented evidence and examined the scene.

Investigators said early findings suggested that speed and alcohol might have contributed to the crash. Those factors remained under investigation, however, and authorities stressed that the findings were preliminary rather than final conclusions.

Investigators continued reviewing evidence to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the road and what occurred immediately before the rollover.
