Scooter Rider Dies After Pasadena Left-Turn Collision

A collision between a motor scooter and a passenger car near Pasadena has resulted in the death of a 39-year-old rider, according to authorities in Anne Arundel County.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:40 a.m. Monday, August 24, at the intersection of Fort Smallwood Road and Hilltop Road. Investigators said a Mazda 6, operated by a 17-year-old driver, was heading south on Fort Smallwood Road before attempting to make a left turn onto Hilltop Road.

At the same time, Robert Louis Tuite, 39, was traveling north on Fort Smallwood Road on a motor scooter. According to the preliminary investigation, the Mazda turned across the scooter’s direction of travel. The scooter then struck the passenger side of the Mazda.

Emergency personnel transported Tuite to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries proved fatal, and authorities said he was pronounced dead at the hospital on August 25, one day after the collision.

Police did not identify the teenage driver by name. CBS Baltimore’s report also did not identify the make or model of Tuite’s motor scooter or report that the Mazda driver suffered serious injuries.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team is handling the investigation. The circumstances described by police focus on the Mazda’s left turn and the scooter’s northbound movement through the intersection, although the investigation will determine the full sequence and any contributing factors.

The crash adds another fatality involving a vulnerable road user on Maryland roads. State transportation officials reported on August 24 that Maryland had recorded 262 roadway fatalities during 2026 as of that date.
