Incident Information

A routine roadside maintenance job turned fatal in southeast Baltimore when a vehicle began rolling backward and struck the worker who had been servicing it.

Baltimore Police said officers responded at approximately 1:19 p.m. on September 28, 2026, to the 900 block of South Kresson Street after receiving a report of a fatal crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 71-year-old vehicle maintenance operator was performing roadside maintenance when the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral. It then began rolling backward.

The operator was outside the vehicle and was struck as it moved.

Emergency medical personnel responded and attempted life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, the worker was pronounced dead.

CBS Baltimore described the vehicle involved as the worker’s maintenance or work truck. Police have not publicly released a manufacturer or model, and the victim’s name was not included in the initial police release.

Baltimore Police Traffic Investigation Unit detectives assumed responsibility for the investigation. Investigators will work to determine exactly how the vehicle began moving and whether a mechanical issue, parking position or another factor contributed.

The crash occurred in Baltimore’s Kresson neighborhood. Geographic records place the Kresson area in East Baltimore at approximately 39.2958, -76.5581, though the crash location in the 900 block of South Kresson Street may differ slightly from the neighborhood’s geographic center.

Police asked anyone with information about the fatal incident to contact Traffic Investigation Unit investigators.

No additional injuries were reported in the initial information.
