Pickup Crash Turns Fatal in Mechanicsville

A Chaptico man was killed Tuesday morning after a pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into roadside objects in Mechanicsville.

Emergency personnel responded at approximately 7:40 a.m. on June 30, 2026, to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road for a reported single-vehicle crash. When first responders arrived, they found a green pickup truck that had gone off the road and struck a tree. The driver, identified as Malik Javonn Somerville, 27, of Chaptico, was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined that the vehicle involved was a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound on Thompson Corner Road. According to the preliminary investigation, the Silverado left the roadway for reasons still under review, struck a utility pole, and then collided with a stand of trees.

Because of the severity of the crash, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to conduct the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that speed and driver error appear to have contributed, though the investigation remains active.
