A John Hopkins Bus Collision in a Baltimore Intersection Results in Injuries and a Condemned Building
Incident Information
At least nine people were taken to the hospital Saturday following a multi-vehicle collision involving a Johns Hopkins shuttle bus, according to Baltimore City Police.
Officers responded around 5:19 p.m. to the intersection of Charles and 25th streets in Charles Village, where the crash occurred.
“We were just chilling, just watching TV, and next thing you know, we heard this big boom. I actually thought that it was a building collapsing,” said Corrin Thomas, a resident who lives in a second-floor apartment of the impacted building. “I see all of this debris everywhere and the car and the bus, and I’m like, oh my God, is everybody okay? Is anybody hurt?”
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the shuttle bus and another vehicle collided in the intersection, causing the bus to veer into a nearby building. Surveillance footage obtained by 11 News shows a white SUV slamming into the side of the bus, which then struck two additional vehicles before crashing into the structure.
Residents in the upper floors of the building reported that the entire structure shook upon impact.
Following the crash, a city building inspector condemned the building, which houses at least two businesses and multiple residential units.
“Well, it’s inconvenient because now we have to go to work tomorrow, but they condemned the building,” said Cory Backus, one of the displaced residents. “They said everybody has to get out. So now we got to figure out where to stay tonight.”
As of now, the conditions of those injured have not been released.
Johns Hopkins University issued a statement Saturday evening:
“Earlier this evening, a Johns Hopkins shuttle bus was involved in an accident at 25th and North Charles Street. The driver and several passengers were transported to area hospitals, and we are working to identify and reach out to all of the shuttle passengers. We are fully cooperating with BPD’s continuing investigation of the accident, and we will update our community as more information becomes available.”
What To Do After a Car Accident
If you’re involved in a car accident, even one involving a bus, taking the right steps immediately is crucial for protecting your health and your legal rights.
First, if you’re able, move yourself and your vehicle to a safe location. Check for any injuries—both your own and others’—and call 911 if anyone is hurt. If you’ve sustained injuries, it’s important to accept medical treatment at the scene.
While you wait at the scene, avoid discussing who was at fault or providing a statement to your insurance company until you’ve spoken with a Maryland car accident attorney. An experienced lawyer can help you navigate the legal and insurance process and ensure your claim is protected.
