Incident Information

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A fatal head-on collision on Point Lookout Road (MD Route 5) near St. Margarets Drive left one person dead and another injured on the morning of May 21, 2025, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 7:17 a.m. and involved a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2011 Ford Econoline van. The collision prompted an extended road closure and an in-depth investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Preliminary investigations suggest the Silverado, driven by 48-year-old Charles Latham of Lexington Park, was traveling northbound when it veered across the center line for reasons yet to be determined, striking the southbound van head-on. The driver of the van, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Latham was airlifted to a regional trauma center by Maryland State Police Trooper 7. Investigators believe a medical emergency may have played a role in the crash.

Emergency crews found one person trapped in the wreckage and completed the extrication at approximately 8:10 a.m. A medevac landing zone was established at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds to facilitate transport.

Due to the severity of the incident, Point Lookout Road remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene. Authorities advised drivers to avoid the area and expect significant delays.
