Crash on I-95 in Elkridge Involving State Trooper Leaves One Dead
Incident Information
Maryland State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning on Interstate 95 in Elkridge, involving a state trooper and resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.
The collision happened around 2:02 a.m. when a Jeep Cherokee struck an unmarked Maryland State Police vehicle parked off the shoulder of the southbound lanes, just north of the Maryland Route 100 exit. The trooper, who was on duty and assigned to the Waterloo Barrack, had stopped his vehicle for reasons not disclosed in the police report.
The impact of the crash pushed the Jeep back into the roadway, where it was subsequently hit by three other vehicles: a GMC pickup truck, a Lincoln SUV, and a Volkswagen passenger car.
The driver of the Volkswagen, identified as 32-year-old Brenton Passmore of Crofton, was arrested at the scene and charged with suspected driving under the influence.
The driver of the Jeep, 30-year-old Saidou Zanguina of Columbia, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Jeep was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with injuries.
The state trooper and the driver of the GMC pickup were also taken to medical facilities for treatment. The trooper has since been released, while the pickup truck driver was treated at Howard County General Hospital.
Southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for approximately four hours as investigators worked the scene. The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to investigate the incident.
